Cholesterol Diet Plan
Cholesterol is a form of fat that easily accumulates in the body due to increased intake of fat laden foods. Fat is an important component in the body as it is a source of energy for the body besides having some other vital functions. The problem with fat is that too much of it can be harmful to the body and leads some chronic heart diseases. Too much fat is not good for the circulatory system as this may raise the levels of cholesterol in the blood which may cause heart attacks or lead to a stroke.
A good cholesterol diet plan should be designed with the following aims in mind;
• It should aim at decreasing the total amount of fats in the diet. The targeted fats are especially the saturated or the hydrogenated ones.
• Reduce the levels of cholesterol in the diet.
• It should also control and limit the intake of sodium in diets.
• It should be able to encourage the intake of increased fiber in every meal. Some vital fibers are such as the complex carbohydrates.
• A decrease in the level of calorie intake for a healthy body.
Cholesterol levels in the blood mostly affect the heart which has a vital role in the circulatory system. The heart is the center of blood circulation and distributes blood through vessels known as arteries. Arteries are crucial to the supply of oxygen and other nutrients to the entire body. Increased levels of cholesterol lead to the deposition some cholesterol in the arteries during transportation.
After a period of time the cholesterol deposit form some kind of waxy substance that clogs essential arteries therefore blocking blood flow to the body or heart. At times this cholesterol may block the blood flowing to the brain and this may cause a serious stroke. If it blocks a coronary artery reducing the level of blood flowing to the heart, then an individual may suffer from heart attack which may be fatal.
The cholesterol found in the body can be traced to two sources. It is understood that most of the cholesterol in the body is manufactured in the liver using some nutrients obtained from dietary fats. The liver of most animals including human beings makes all the required cholesterol in the body. Another source of cholesterol is believed to be from animal products such as meat, milk, poultry products, e.t.c. most of the cholesterol from such products is absorbed and circulated through the circulatory system. A diet that is mostly composed of saturated fat can also contribute to the increased levels of cholesterol in the blood.
There are some diets or foods that an individual should keep off if they are planning on a cholesterol diet plan. These are:
• Animal liver and any other type of organic meat
• Egg yolks and most poultry products
• Dairy products that are high in fat levels and fatty ice cream
• Keep off some types of fried foods especially those fried using saturated fats or oils
• Most fast foods including hamburgers ad fries.
