Fractured Wrist Treatment
Fractured wrist treatment is often overlooked as one of those things that will “just heal”. In reality it’s one of the bones in the human body that is most susceptible to injury. When talking about fractures the wrist is a common place for it to happen. For children and adults under the age of 70, the wrist is the most often broken bone.
It has been estimated that nearly 20 percent of broken bones treated in emergency rooms are in the wrist. Diagnosing this condition usually starts by identifying a few symptoms. These include pain, swelling and noticeable change in appearance in the affected area.
If an individual goes through life without a broken bone, he can consider himself fortunate. It has been estimated that the medical profession in the United States alone treats nearly seven million bone fractures each year. Of course, certain activities and professions increase a person’s likelihood of experiencing a break.
Skiers and snowboarders often experience trauma to the upper extremities. Statistics from a Scottish study indicate that a quarter of the injuries experienced by snowboarders affect the wrist. This is understandable when you consider the nature of the sport and how important the hands and arms are for balance when the feet are attached to the snowboard.
Care to take a guess at what the most common of the wrist injuries in snowboarding were? Yes, fractures were diagnosed 70 percent of the time. It should be noted that the actual overall risk for an individual receiving a break while participating in this sport is high only in comparison to other activities. Snowboarding by no means guarantees a broken bone.
When these injuries occur, fractured wrist treatment will probably involve use of a cast. When the bones are out of alignment they will need to be reset by a professional before the cast is set in place. The cast will keep the bones in proper position and protect them while they heal.
Sometimes surgery will be necessary. Each break is unique and a determination will have to be made case by case.
