Health And Wellness – Are Cigarettes On The Way Out?

Regardless of whether one smokes, or does not smoke, or approves of it or doesn’t approve, the geopolitical climate with regard to cigarettes is interesting.

Everyone is interested in health and wellness issues, and smoking is certainly one of those newsworthy issues.

What is up with cigarettes these days? Here are some of the things that are going on:

Cigarette taxation – The less money states and governments seems to have, the more people appear to be talking about adding additional taxes on to each pack of cigarettes. This is a revenue stream, as much as it has anything to do with health, it appears.

Fake cigarettes – Counterfeit cigarettes labeled as a name brand are essentially trying to steal the brand equity of the major cigarette manufacturers.

Europe – The European Union has several measures in process trying to set a minimum pricing on cigarettes. Perhaps this, too, is a measure directed toward gaining additional revenue for the governments.

Currency rates – In our global economy, the availability of certain kinds of cigarettes from certain countries, is being impacted by exchange rates. Whoever would have thought that currency fluctuations would influence how apt a person is to purchase a certain brand.

Regulation – More and more the smoking industry is being asked to become subject to governmental regulation. Whether it is labeling about health risks or restrictions on advertising where kids might see it, the industries of alcohol and cigarettes are favorites for restriction and regulation.

Growth – With fewer and fewer people finding smoking to be socially acceptable, it could happen in the future that such companies will have difficulty hiring and retaining employees.

Legal – It is unknown at this time whether litigation involving cigarette and tobacco companies has peaked, or if there is more yet to come. While the western world has seen much activity in this regard, perhaps there is more in the way of legal issues coming in developing nations.

There appear to be notable stress factors on the business of tobacco. Whether this will result in fewer people smoking, or will result in a shake out of the various tobacco companies, we do not know. We shall have to wait and see.
