Heavy Metal Detox – Important Facts To Know

Toxic heavy metals are a group of heavy metals that provide no function in the body other than to cause harm. The five main toxic heavy metals, that just about all of us are affected with to one degree or another, are arsenic, lead, mercury, cadmium and aluminum. These metals are present in pesticides that are sprayed on our foods, are found in paints and other industrial products and are present in our water supplies as a result of pollution. The Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry has classified arsenic, lead and mercury as the three most toxic substances known to date! So what effect do these toxic heavy metals have within us?

Mineral Displacement
The toxic heavy metals within us have to go somewhere. Unfortunately they can act like bullies that eject the healthy minerals that should be at the center of our cells and ‘move in’ in place of them. One good example is our red blood cells which contain a molecule of iron at the center. However, the toxic heavy metal mercury can displace the iron and render that red blood cell useless and end its ability to deliver oxygen to other cells. In addition to this, cells that have been affected by mineral displacement are often recognized as foreign bodies and attacked by our own immune system, creating inflammatory damage.

Free Radicals
There is a lot of talk lately about the damaging effect of free radicals upon our cells and toxic heavy metals in our bodies act as free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that in an effort to become stabilized ‘steal’ an electron from a neighboring molecule (such as our healthy cells) and in the process damage that cell. This creates a knock on effect because the damaged cell is now unstable and needs an electron and a free radical chain reaction occurs. This free radical damage is probably one of the worst side effects of heavy metal toxicity because it creates inflammation that can lead to cancer, heart disease, arthritis and other degenerative diseases.

Generating Electricity
Yes, you read correctly – generating electricity! When two metals come into contact with each other in water, they create an electric current. We are 70% water, so if there are any areas in our tissues where two different metals are close enough together – they will be creating a current! These electric currents are big contributors to heart disease because they generate plaque build up in our arteries and can cause the heart to beat irregularly. The electric currents also have a strong suppressive effect upon the immune system.

Acidity
Toxic heavy metals are very acidic in nature and strongly contribute to generating an overly acidic body PH. Such an acidic environment can give host to a variety of health problems. Pathogens, bacterias and viruses thrive much better in acidic environments and acidity is even connected in some way to cancer, arthritis and heart disease. Acidity is also a very clear cause of heartburn in many people.

Fortunately there are a variety of natural foods and health products that we can take that help to clear these toxic heavy metals out of the body. This method of toxic heavy metal detox is called oral chelation. A chelator is any food, product or device that can help remove toxic heavy metals from the body.
