Treadmills seem only to keep growing in popularity year after year. You often see treadmill workout or running scenes in your favorite TV show or a movie. This familiarity subliminally feeds the intrigue. New models of electric treadmills hardly resemble earlier models from the fifties. Cup holders, quick disconnect cords, lap top holders, built in stereo systems are all some of the new features that spark the interest of new comers.

Early treadmill equipment in the 1800’s was designed for churning butter. Dogs and sheep powered the equipment. It was not until 1950’s that a design for cardiovascular and lung testing was patented. Later that patent was sold off to Stair Master then to Nautilus Corporation, and the rest is history. Depending on how old you are you might remember the non-electric treadmills that were so hard to get going and impossible to stop. This was not an inviting experience.

Home exercise equipment has changed tremendously in the last century. The motorized treadmill is usually one of the pieces of equipment included when planning your home gym. There are a few tips to follow when making your decision on purchasing treadmill equipment. First, decide how much you want to spend. Electric treadmills can run any where from $300 to $3000. If you are purchasing in inexpensive or cheap treadmill make sure the company will be around for a while, for replacement parts, and get a good warranty with your purchase. Try a couple of models out for a trial run. A cup holder for a water bottle is important. Make sure the machine starts smooth and stops slow. A quick disconnect line in case you fall will stop machine. The handrails need to be at a comfort level for you. This is really important, remember you will be walking or running at least 20 minutes so if you are reaching up or leaning way over you could feel muscle strain in your shoulders. A timer and calorie counter is important so you can gauge your progress and challenge yourself. You also can get an adjustable incline on your treadmill this will really make a difference in your workout.

Making sure to get the OK from you a family doctor also needs to be on your checklist. Once that is in line, and your new electric treadmill is set up, you are on your way to one of the best cardio-workout available. I’ve spent hours in the gym over the years and while the results are often worth it, the sacrifice to my free time isn’t. While I am a homeowner now, I have lived in small apartments where there just wasn’t room for bulky exercise equipment or even to do complicated cardio routines. Some of the best fitness tools available are fitness exercise bands.

Not only are fitness exercise bands completely portable, but fitness band exercises will give your body a complete workout in a small amount of time. You can do everything you would normally do with dumbells and more! Get a full workout for both your upper and lower body; with a little know how, you can work every major muscle group using fitness exercise bands.

If you hold each end of the exercise band, one in each hand, and stand on the center of the band, with a few simple modifications you can work your biceps, triceps, shoulders and back without ever leaving your spot. I’ve found that I can do double duty by adding a squat with each arm or back move. That’s twice the workout in half the time.

When sitting on the floor and hooking the center of the band around a sturdy object above you, you can get the same benefits of doing pull ups but on a less intense level. Just by changing the angle at which you are pulling the exercise bands, you can work several different muscles.

For legs, tie one end around your ankle and the other around a heavy table or couch leg and do front, back and side leg lifts for a great lower body workout. Add that squat between reps to burn some extra calories.

I’ve gotten really ambitious in the past and paired my exercise bands with lightweight dumbells for an even more intense experience. To really get my heart pumping, I’ll do 60 seconds of jumping jacks between sets. Now I’m getting cardio and working my muscles all in one sitting.

Fitness exercise bands are completely versatile and portable so if I remember to toss them in my purse or suitcase, I have no excuses for not getting in a complete workout, no matter where I happen to be.
